Transponder key programming is the step that turns a piece of cut metal into a key your car will accept. Most cars built since the early 2000s have a small chip in the key; some Hyundai and Kia models had none until 2021. The immobilizer listens for that chip. Turn the key and the car sends a short radio signal. The chip answers with a code. If the code matches, the engine starts. If not, the starter may crank but the fuel and spark never come.
That is why a key copied at a hardware store will open your doors and turn in the ignition but leave you sitting there. The blade is right. The chip is missing or blank. We fix that at the car, in Coronado or anywhere on San Diego's bay side, with the equipment needed to introduce a new chip to your immobilizer.
We also erase chips. If a transponder key is lost or stolen, we remove it from the car's list of trusted keys so it can no longer start the engine.

Key head split, engine cranks at Dog Beach
Sand, salt and a heavy key ring finally split the plastic head of the key, and now the engine cranks and dies in the lot by the river channel. The chip lived inside that head, and it is gone. We cut a fresh key and program its chip through the port under the dash, so the car does not need a tow to anyone.
Only the unprogrammed spare left at Sunset Cliffs
The original went into the water off the rocks, and the spare you had cut months ago opens the door, turns in the ignition and leaves the engine silent. It was cut but never introduced to the immobilizer. Stolen spare key erased at Mission Bay Park
Someone took the bag from the picnic table at Mission Bay Park, and the spare key and the registration were in it. You still have your own key, so nothing needs cutting. We connect to the car in the lot and remove the stolen key from the immobilizer's memory, so the blade may open a door but the engine will not run for it.

How do I know if my key has a transponder chip?
If your car was built since the early 2000s and the key has a thick plastic head, it very likely does. The chip is sealed inside the plastic and has no battery. Some Hyundai and Kia models had no chip until 2021, so ask us if you are not sure.
The security light is flashing and the car will not start. Is it the key?
Often, yes. A flashing security light while cranking usually means the immobilizer did not recognize the chip, or the chip in a key that used to work has been damaged. We read the system, program a fresh key and get you moving. If the key has snapped, see broken key extraction.
