Chevrolet key replacement in Coronado and San Diego

Chevrolet trucks and SUVs do a lot of the hauling around San Diego Bay, and when the key to one goes missing the vehicle tends to be somewhere inconvenient. We drive to it. A lost Silverado key, a spare for the Equinox, a Tahoe fob that no longer unlocks anything, a transponder key that needs pairing. We cut, program and test at the vehicle, in Coronado or anywhere on the bay side.

GM has changed its anti-theft systems several times, so the year of your Chevrolet matters more than with some brands. Older cars and trucks used PassKey, with a resistor pellet in the blade, or PassLock, which sits in the ignition itself and uses a plain key. Transponder keys arrived on most Chevrolets in the mid 2000s, and push-button start with a proximity fob followed on newer models. We check which system yours has before we quote.

Chevrolet key types we cut and program

PassKey and PassLock keys on older models

Many older Chevrolets have no chip in the key at all. PassKey keys carry a small resistor in the blade, and PassLock reads a sensor in the ignition, so a plain cut key works once the system is happy with the lock.

Transponder chip keys

Since about the mid 2000s most Chevrolets read a chip in the key head. We program the chip to the vehicle at the curb, whether or not you still have a key.

Flip keys and remote-head keys

Many Chevrolets from the 2010s use a switchblade-style key with the remote built in. We cut the blade and pair the remote and chip in one stop.

Smart keys and push-to-start fobs

Newer Chevrolets with push-button start use a proximity fob. We stock fobs for most current Chevrolets and pair them where the vehicle is parked.

What we do for Chevrolet owners

  • All keys lost on a Chevrolet, with the new key cut from the VIN once your ID and proof of ownership are checked
  • Spare keys and extra fobs paired beside the one you have
  • Proximity fob pairing on Chevrolets with push-button start
  • Replacement flip keys and remotes when the blade has worn or the buttons have died
  • Deleting lost or stolen keys from the vehicle's memory
  • Sorting out an older PassLock system that refuses to let the engine run

  • Chevrolet Silverado
  • Chevrolet Equinox
  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • Chevrolet Malibu

Chevrolet keys around Coronado and San Diego

Silverados and Colorados tow boats to the Chula Vista Bayfront and the Shelter Island launch ramp, and a key dropped off a dock is where many of our Chevrolet calls begin. Tahoes and Traverses wait in the family lots at Otay Ranch Town Center and Plaza Bonita and outside the Naval Amphibious Base on the Silver Strand. Equinoxes, Malibus and Cruzes are common in the Downtown garages near Petco Park and along 30th Street, and Bolts charge in the structures at Fashion Valley and Liberty Station. From the Coronado Cays to the Mile of Cars, we make Chevy keys where the vehicle sits.

Chevrolet key questions

My older Chevy has a plain key with no chip. Why will it not start?

It may be a PassLock car. That system reads a sensor in the ignition cylinder rather than a chip in the key, and when the sensor or the cylinder wears, the security light comes on and the engine cuts out after a moment. A new key alone will not fix it. We diagnose it at the vehicle and repair or replace the ignition if that is the fault.

Can you make a Chevrolet key when every key is gone?

Yes. We pull the key code for the vehicle, cut a fresh blade and program the transponder or proximity fob at the car, with no original needed. Bring your ID and the registration or title so we can confirm ownership before we start. The steps are on our car key replacement page.

Do you program Chevy fobs for push-button start models?

For most current Chevrolets, yes. We bring a compatible fob, pair it through the diagnostic port, and erase any that are missing so they cannot unlock or start the vehicle. You test lock, unlock, remote start if fitted and the ignition before we leave. See key fob programming.
