Kia and Hyundai share most of their key technology, and the same caveat applies. A good many base-trim Kias sold up to about 2021 have no transponder, so the key is a plain cut blade, and those cars became well known for being easy to steal. Better-equipped trims from those years and most current Kias use a chipped key, a flip key with a remote, or a smart key with push-button start.

Basic metal keys on many base trims
Many Kias built up to about 2021 with a turn-key ignition on a base trim have no immobilizer. A key cut to the factory code is the complete job on those cars.
Transponder chip keys
Higher trims of the same years and most recent Kias check a chip in the key before the engine will run. We program the chip at the vehicle, with or without an existing key.
Flip keys with remote
Many Kias use a folding key with lock, unlock and trunk buttons in the head. We cut the blade and pair the remote, plus the chip where one is fitted.
Smart keys and push-to-start fobs
Kias with push-button start use a smart key paired to the car. The right smart key for most Kias comes with us and is programmed at the car.

Kia key questions
My Kia has a plain metal key. Is that really all it needs?
On many base trims up to about 2021, yes. Those cars have no immobilizer, so a key cut to the code starts the engine with nothing to program. If yours has a chip, the car will crank but not run on a plain blade, and we program the chip instead. Send us the VIN and we will confirm before we come out.
Can you make a Kia smart key if I lost the only one?
Yes, for most push-button start Kias. We pair a compatible smart key through the diagnostic port with the car present and remove the lost one from memory. Bring your ID and the registration or title; we check them before starting. The visit is described on our car key replacement page.
Someone tried to steal my Kia and damaged the ignition. Can you fix it at the car?
Usually, yes. Attempted thefts on these cars often leave a broken steering column cover and a damaged ignition cylinder. We replace the cylinder at the car and key it to your existing door key. If the car has an immobilizer, we also erase any keys that went missing. See ignition repair.
