Crown Point Shores is where paddleboards and kayaks go in, and a fob in a swim trunk pocket goes in with them. It may still light up afterward and quit later in the day. We come to the lot off Crown Point Drive, test what is left of the fob, and program a new one to the car so you are not stranded when it fails.

An older car, a worn key, and one more turn after a day on the coaster. The blade shears at the shoulder and the stub is stuck in the ignition. A rental bike, a long ride down the boardwalk, and a fob that slipped out somewhere before Crystal Pier. The car is in a Mission Beach court, one of the narrow walkways between Mission Boulevard and the sand where we cannot drive in. We park on the boulevard, carry the equipment to the car, and make a new key and fob there.

Garnet and Grand are metered and the side streets fill by late morning, so we take what is open and walk. Tell us the block of Garnet, or the beach lot: Tourmaline, the pier end of Garnet, or Belmont Park. For Mission Bay, name the picnic area or launch and the row; light poles are the easiest landmarks after dark. In Mission Beach, say whether you are in a court, an alley or on Mission Boulevard; the courts are walk-in only. The resort lots on the bay have gates, so let the front desk know we are coming.

  • Crystal Pier

    The pier is gated at the foot of Garnet, and the closest parking is the metered spaces on Garnet and the side streets off Ocean Boulevard. If the key went off the pier, tell us which street you are on and we cut a new one at the car.

  • Garnet Avenue

    Metered spots along Garnet and a short walk from every bar. If you retraced your steps and the fob is nowhere, we open the car and program a replacement at the curb. Tell us the block; Garnet is long.

  • Mission Bay Park

    Big lots at the picnic areas and the boat launches, more of them than anyone can name from memory. Tell us which one, De Anza Cove, Ski Beach, or the launch off West Mission Bay Drive, and we open the car without a mark on the door.

  • The boardwalk and Tourmaline Surfing Park

    Tourmaline has its own lot at the end of Tourmaline Street, full of boards and wetsuits by first light. A hidden key that is not there when you get back. We make a fresh one in the lot.

  • Mission Beach and Belmont Park

    The lot at Belmont Park off Mission Boulevard fills first, and after that it is the courts and places between Mission Boulevard and the boardwalk. Lost keys after a full day on the beach are the usual call. We meet you at the lot or on the court you name.
